Coverage rate is where most ice-melt budgets quietly leak: operators reach for a heavy hand, and the extra product does not melt faster — it over-dilutes, refreezes and scatters off the surface. How far a bag or tonne actually goes depends on the product, the temperature and the condition of the ice you are treating, and getting the rate right cuts both cost and surface damage. The figures below are starting points for CaCl₂, rock salt and blended ice melt; the right number for your site depends on how cold it gets, how much traffic packs the ice, and whether you are maintaining a clear surface or recovering a frozen one.
As a starting reference, CaCl₂ ice melt covers roughly 20–35 g/m² for routine maintenance, rising for bonded or packed ice and for the coldest days. Rock salt needs noticeably more product per square metre to do the same job and works only in a narrower, warmer temperature band. Liquid and brine are measured in litres per square metre rather than grams, but the principle is the same — match the dose to the ice, not to the worst storm of the year.
A thin, even spread melts faster than a heavy pile. Piled product over-dilutes the meltwater, which then refreezes once the concentration drops, and loose granules bounce and scatter off the pavement before they ever activate. Pre-wetting solids with brine keeps them on the surface and starts the melt sooner, so you use less material for the same result. Calibrating your spreader once at the start of the season pays for itself in product saved.
The colder it gets, the more product any de-icer needs to keep working, and the faster a low-temperature grade earns its place. Above −7 °C a light rate of plain salt clears most events; as the mercury drops toward −15 °C and below, shifting to CaCl₂ at a measured rate melts more ice per kilogram than piling on salt that has already lost most of its punch.
Estimating annual volume from realistic per-event rates — rather than from your heaviest day — keeps storage sized correctly and avoids both shortfalls and a yard full of caking product in spring.
