Overview

Magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) is the lower-corrosion member of the chloride family, prized where infrastructure, vegetation and concrete need protecting. It melts ice to roughly −15 °C — colder than rock salt, warmer than calcium chloride — and does so more gently, which is exactly why crews choose it for parking structures, newer concrete, roadside planting and other corrosion-sensitive sites. Effective to about −15 °C, it is supplied as flakes, 30 % liquid and in 20 kg bags.

Its second major role is summer: magnesium chloride is one of the two standard gravel-road dust suppressants. Because it is hygroscopic, a single liquid or flake application pulls moisture from the air and binds the road's fine particles for weeks, cutting dust, washboarding and aggregate loss far longer than a water truck ever could.
