There is no single de-icer application rate — the right amount changes with temperature, the surface you are treating, and whether you are preventing ice from forming or melting ice already bonded. Too little and the surface stays dangerous; too much and you waste product, damage concrete and vegetation, and leave residue to sweep. Use the guidance below as a starting reference and adjust to the conditions in front of you. The same storm can need very different rates on a highway, a parking lot and a pedestrian walkway, and pre-treating before ice forms uses far less product than melting it after — so think in terms of temperature, surface and timing together rather than reaching for one fixed scoop every time.
Temperature sets the floor for how much product you need and which product to use. Above about −7 °C, rock salt at a light maintenance rate clears most events. As the temperature falls toward −15 °C and below, salt loses effectiveness, so shift to calcium chloride or a blend — and expect to apply somewhat more product as it gets colder, because every de-icer works harder and slower in deep cold.
Open roads tolerate mechanical spreading at standard maintenance rates and can take the meltwater runoff. Parking lots sit between roads and walkways and benefit from pre-wetting to keep product in place. Pedestrian walkways and entrances need a lighter, even hand-spread to avoid tracking granules indoors and over-applying on concrete — a thin, deliberate pass beats a heavy scatter every time.
Preventing ice (anti-icing) with brine before a storm uses far less material than melting bonded ice after the fact. A light pre-storm brine application can cut the total product used for an event substantially, because you are stopping the bond rather than breaking it. When ice is already down, de-icing rates rise with how thick and how cold the ice is.
Calibrate spreaders at the start of the season so the rate you intend is the rate you get, apply evenly rather than in heavy bands, and sweep up excess once the melt is done to recover product and protect surfaces. Pedestrian surfaces always take a lighter hand than roads at the same temperature, and anti-icing before a storm uses less than de-icing after one. Treat these as starting points, not rules — wind, sun, traffic and ice thickness all shift the real number — and adjust from what you see on the ground.
