Choosing the right de-icer
No single de-icer is best for every condition. Rock salt (sodium chloride) is the economical workhorse down to about −7 °C and handles the majority of events. As the temperature falls, CaCl₂ takes over — it melts to roughly −32 °C, releases heat as it dissolves and acts fastest, which is why crews reach for CaCl₂ ice melt on priority surfaces and in deep cold. Magnesium chloride sits between them with a gentler, lower-corrosion profile for sensitive sites.
Anti-icing vs de-icing
There are two ways to fight ice, and the cheapest programs use both. Anti-icing applies liquid brine before a storm so snow and ice cannot bond to the pavement, cutting the material and labour needed afterward. De-icing then melts whatever accumulates, with solid flake and pellet carrying the most melting capacity per load. Pre-wetting solids with brine keeps them on the road and starts the melt sooner.
Formats and supply
